The 2025 MQK is intended as a competition/musabaqah to showcase the abilities of santri from all over Indonesia and Southeast Asian countries in reading, understanding, and comprehensively expressing the contents of classical Islamic texts (Kitab Kuning). The 2025 National–Southeast Asian MQK aims to motivate and enhance the skills of santri in studying and deepening their knowledge of Islamic religious sciences based on Kitab Kuning, as part of the process of nurturing future ulama and community leaders. Additionally, it fosters the establishment of silaturahmi (bonds of friendship) among Islamic boarding schools (pondok pesantren) throughout Indonesia and Southeast Asia, in order to realize Islamic unity in Indonesia and the Southeast Asian region.
In the 2025 National–Southeast Asian MQK, the competition is divided into four
stages: Marhala Ula, Marhala Wustha, Marhala Ulya, and Ma’had Aly.
